Habilitation centres and habilitation teams

There are a total of 29 habilitation centres and habilitation teams in the county.

Most of the habilitation centres offer a broad range of treatments and are designed for people with mental retardation, mobility impairments and multiple disabilities. The staff have specific knowledge of the circumstances of people with disabilities.

Six habilitation centres and habilitation teams specialise in autism and Asperger’s syndrome, one in acquired brain damage and three in vision and hearing. At these centres, the staff have indepth knowledge of a certain disability, but the range of counselling, support and treatment may differ in comparison with the other habilitation centres.

Four of the habilitation centres are located in compulsory schools and one at Riksgymnasiet upper-secondary school in Skärholmen. They offer habilitation activities during school hours.

All staff are bound by professional secrecy and obliged to keep journals. All habilitation activities are free of charge. The habilitation centres also work with healthcare institutions, preschools and schools, municipal disability care providers and social services to spread knowledge of the needs of people with disabilities.

Children and young people who are in contact with a children’s clinic usually gain access to the habilitation centre and habilitation team via a doctor’s referral. Adult habilitation centres can be contacted directly by letter or phone.

We draw up a habilitation plan together

We assess needs and wishes together with the individual, their parents or a representative. We suggest how to deal with the problems the disability entails and summarise the goals, content and scope of the proposed activities in a so-called habilitation plan.
